Bill Shannon
Program Director
Mornings 6-9am
Born in Libertyville, IL and raised in Milwaukee, WI, Bill grew up on baseball, beer, brats and golf until his interests turned to radio and being on-air. “My grandfather was a locally well-known sports editor for the Milwaukee Journal newspaper who covered golf and bowling so I was always around the media. It was simply a matter of time before I was smitten by the broadcast bug.”
So, he interned for Milwaukee’s WTMJ. “It was a thrill to walk the halls with people who I grew up listening to.” Bill was hooked. Eventually he landed weekends at a top 40 station in Two Rivers, WI about 90 miles north of Milwaukee. “I worked full-time during the week at a grocery store and drove nearly two hours one-way just to do weekends there. That’s how badly I wanted on-the-air.” Soon thereafter he returned to Milwaukee where he stayed for nearly a decade, working at Top 40, Oldies and Lite Rock stations. His career then sent him to Rockford, IL, Minneapolis-St. Paul, back to Milwaukee, WI, Green Bay, WI & Des Moines, IA where he programmed Oldies and then Country. “Although I was enjoying my career in country, I longed for a return to the format I love…oldies.” So he moved to Toledo, OH to program oldies WRQN, and then moved to the Low Country of South Carolina in Charleston as Program Director of Oldies 102.5 where his love affair with South Carolina and Charleston began. Following a six year successful run he returned to Columbus, OH to program Classic Hits/Oldies WODB. After 4-years South Carolina beckoned again as Bill joined Movin’ 94.5 in Myrtle Beach . Following a year in Myrtle Beach (and a short drive down 17), Bill has returned to Charleston to program and host mornings for FM 95.9 and hasn’t looked back. (If anyone’s keeping score its South Carolina 3 and Ohio 2). “Being from the upper Midwest I spent many a cold winter’s night dreaming of working in a climate where it seldom if ever snows. Of course upon arrival I fell head over heels in love with South Carolina and Charleston. It’s a gorgeous place, alongside the ocean, rich in history and a golfer’s paradise. To be able to fulfill my career goals and live here is truly a blessing.” Aside from getting listeners up and going in the morning, Bill is an avid golfer, enjoys photography and just strolling the sands of Sullivans Island and the Isle of Palms. Bill is married (both to wife Debra and the station) and is father of 23 year-old Stephanie and 14 year-old Chloe (our cat who thinks she’s human).
